How Machine Learning Engages Students

Learning environments that incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning tools adapt to the input received by users. That means as students navigate the coursework, assessment data, time spent in learning modules, and other factors influence the content served next. Instructor input is also used in some models.

The result is that each learner receives a unique path through the content designed to reinforce areas of knowledge that are more difficult for that student to grasp while accelerating the pace of work the student grasps easily

The statistics supporting the effectiveness of these new tools are apparent in multiple studies from the past couple of years. TechJury’s independent review team spent some time doing a roundup of 2020s most startling findings from the literature, and one of the most startling revelations was the strong positive response from students. The sources reviewed found that 81 percent of college students believe digital learning tools are helping them improve their grades.

Gamified Learning and Student Engagement

Another addition to many online learning systems over the last half-decade has been gamified learning. There are many ways to implement it, but one of the most common tools is another application of machine learning to the classroom, behavioral insights. Insights track student engagement and provide feedback to both the instructor and the student.

On the instructor end, gamified learning tracks and displays engagement in various contexts alongside assessment performance and, where applicable, the customized content path served to the learner. This empowers instructors in academic and corporate training environments with the information they need to address student success issues early. As a result, the Guide2Research roundup of 2020 interactive learning statistics found a study where 73 percent of teachers had adopted gamified learning tools of this kind or another.

Educational games with traditional video game structures and reward systems have also become increasingly popular. Especially among younger age groups who engage with video games regularly outside the classroom. It’s not just younger learners, though. That same roundup found corporate training and professional development programs using game systems for microlearning increased engagement 50 percent over their previous levels.

Devise a Digital Strategy

So how can your organization make use of these digital learning tools to improve engagement and success? It all starts with your strategy, which should be informed by your organizational goals and the individual goals of the users. Corporate learning and development will have different answers from the academic world, as it should, but it can use the same tools.

Online Learning Lessons from the Pandemic

Even before COVID-19 changed the map for educators around the world, online learning was growing rapidly, with reliable projections estimating it would reach over $6 billion by 2022. When the pandemic mandated online learning for many in the United States and abroad, it created a massive and sudden shift in the educational paradigm. Those who had already embraced online learning tools and workspaces adapted quickly, and the rest learned important lessons in those first few months.

Build Courses With Next-Generation Tools

Learning management systems have been the standard for the last decade, but over the course of the last year or two eLearning digital tools and software use has broadened. Many online learning regimens incorporate multiple levels of gamified learning, multimedia content delivery, behavioral insights, and other interactive tools to reach students with a wider variety of cognitive styles than ever before.

Corporations and educational institutions alike need to embrace these tools to maintain their competitive edge nationally and globally, because they are broadly popular worldwide and widely appreciated by students.
