Moodle HQ developer Andrew Nicols shares the first update of the “Expanded Question Bank Management/Categorization” project, chosen in the 2017 January-July Development Cycle by the members of the Moodle Users Association (MUA).

As MUA’s President Emma Richardson had announced, this is the first project whose progress can be followed openly on the Moodle Tracker, the LMS’ technical development dashboard. Users can keep track of any updates, and even contribute with code or ideas, using the project’s code MUA-32.

The focus of the project is to extend the abilities of teachers to better manage individual questions in Moodle’s Question Bank, through content tags and collections or “question sets.” It also makes it easier to generate quizzes made of randomly selected questions from the bank that still fulfill the assessment criteria. It streamlines teacher workflow and prevents redundancies.

Going into some of the technical details involved, to accomplish this enhanced flexibility means to add a “metadata layer” to the question bank. This layer will allow teachers to add tags or labels to individual questions and then use them as filters or search criteria in the creation of Quiz activities. As Nicols explain, the current focus of the development is to modify the existing structure of the questions to ensure compatibility with the metadata layer. User-facing pages and option menus are another area of progress. He expects a prototype version available in the coming days.

You can also find both project requirements and updates at the project’s page in the Moodle Docs. At the time of writing it did not reflect the January update.
