images (4)Castleton State College in my home state of Vermont published an article in the student newspaper yesterday (on Earth Day) highlighting the school’s efforts for it’s own Sustainability Month which ended in April. The effort included prompts to turn down the heat (risky in Vermont in April where there’s likely still snow on the mountain tops), use more natural light, and even (maybe) turn off the water to campus for a day.

Additionally through an all campus email two student leaders promoted the use of the school’s learning management system, Moodle, as a way to reduce the use of handouts and printing,

“We urge you to fully utilize Moodle and to print double-sided, and we will provide the location of double-sided printers at all non-applicable printing sites! Help us identify small and large ways we can be more sustainable,” wrote LaRose in the email.

While going digital isn’t completely without a carbon footprint, the use of online resources (rather than handouts), etextbooks (rather than hard copies), online quizzes and activities (instead of paper based copies) are each ways to reduce the amount of paper and material used in a classroom. Not to mention a carbon reduction from those students who do not commute but rather take a course online.
