If you have been a moodler for a significant part of the 15 years that Moodle has been in existence, and sometimes the nostalgia about how far this software and this community have come, you are not alone. And if you need to stop while administrating your Moodle to wonder in awe about the collective effort it took to make it so easy and intuitive for you, for all of us, look no further.

On the occasion of MoodleMoot France 2016, Nicolas Martignoni has made a video visualization about this wonderful process. It begin when Martin Dougiamas wrote the core. Soon enough hundreds of names would start adding contributions. First, to expand the core and give stability. A yellow cloud is made of hundred of dots representing PHP contributions.

A second wave that would end up bigger than the first would be the translations, a blue cloud. This shows us Moodle’s global role, not unlike that of Wikipedia or Linux. A third accompanying set of red dots narrate the addition of CSS properties to Moodle. A fourth one, of green particles, are the JavaScript.

Some contributors have clouds of their own. Besides Dougiamas, it would make no justice to mention just some of them. But you can find them in the video.

We move away from the cloud as it becomes bigger and bigger. We follow the development of the Moodle 1.x, and sometime in 2009 the beginning of what would become Moodle 2. A preparation that would take over 2 and a half years.

Other milestones include the addition of images and icons (the purple cloud), the introduction of AMOS, the language pack translation tools, and how we arrived at Moodle 3. One can only wonder what the future awaits.

Watch the video, and share the nostalgia.

This video was made by Nicolas Martignoni with Code Swarm. Music credit goes to Kevin MacLeod.
