August is synonymous with celebration for the Moodleverse. At midnight on August 20th, 2002, Moodle 1.0, the first official, definitive (no betas) release, saw the light of day.

August is also an opportunity to highlight the events and lessons learned in the first half of the year. And this year, these highlights, more often than not, are good news:

  • Moodle reached 100 million registered users, a big milestone for learning and open source technologies.
  • The volume of development by volunteer Moodlers is still non-stop, in terms of new plugins, themes, bug detection and fixes, and the availability of Moodle in more languages.
  • The largest gatherings of Moodlers so far with successful “Moots” in all five continents.
  • New developments from Moodle 3.3 (and soon 3.4), Moodle Desktop, Moodle Mobile, and MoodleCloud as they launch Moodle into the next decade.

We join and the Moodleverse in the celebration and offer many words of congratulations and hope for the future of humanity’s open-source learning.
