Plan to use Moodle? Training may be required

Depending on what state or country you live in you may now have a hurdle if you’re interested in implementing/using Moodle in your classroom: required professional development and training.  At least one state in the US now have a minimum training requirement for any teacher who wants to “teach an online course in a public school, including a charter school” (Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin:

The requirement in Wisconsin is for 30 hours of professional development for elearning/online classroom instruction.  The course content is based on the NACOL National Standards for Quality Online Teaching, through the requirement teachers must meet these criteria (and more):

The teacher plans, designs and incorporates strategies to encourage active learning, interaction, participation and collaboration in the online environment.

The teacher provides online leadership in a manner that promotes student success through regular feedback, prompt response and clear expectations.

The teacher models, guides and encourages legal, ethical, safe and healthy behavior related to technology use.

The teacher demonstrates competencies in creating and implementing assessments in online learning environments in ways that assure validity and reliability of instruments and procedures.

For those interested in learning Moodle specifically you might check out the MCCC ( which is available through Moodle Partners globally for around $400.  Just make sure the curriculum will also help you meet the training/professional development requirements your state or district have enforced.
