Packt Publishing has an interesting update on their news feed which focuses on their donations and funding to Open Source projects over the last few years. According to the post they’ve provided over $300,000 to open source projects around the world, including Moodle [link to news piece].

The support they provide to the projects is used to put on conferences, hire developers and to maintain the community-focus which gives so many projects that additional level of success.  Packt donates a portion of every book sale to the Open Source project which is covered in the content; so if you want to donate to Moodle, one way would be through the purchase of books.  (If you want to donate more directly you can always visit http://moodle.org/donations/.)

Says Martin Dougiamas of the royalty donations to Moodle,

Moodle is grateful for the royalty donations that Packt have volunteered to send us as part of their Open Source Project Royalty Scheme. The money donated helps us fund a developer for a few months a year and thus contributes directly towards Moodle core development, support and improvements in the future.

Seems like a great positive feedback loop.  For more information about Packt’s royalty program or to purchase Moodle titles such as “Moodle 1.9 Extensions Cookbook” or “Moodle as a Curriculum and Information Management System” visit http://www.packtpub.com/books/moodle.
