As a Moodle Partner, Moodlerooms understand the importance of not only borrowing from Moodle and its community, but being part of its ongoing dialog. In an profile for Moodlerooms’ E-Learn Magazine, Blackboard Open Source Services VP Phillip Miller puts it best:
«I think the open source philosophy is very close to the philosophy of open research, open interaction and open dialogue in education»
This helps to understand why Blackboard, one of the largest learning technology providers in the world, decided to participate in the Open Source world and include Moodle in their portfolio, by way of Moodlerooms.
Miller wants to offer support to instructors and students everywhere, which happens indirectly when a small class installs Moodle and uses some of Moodlerooms’ contributions or extensions such as the Snap theme. But the support is increasingly happening directly, as Moodlerooms market share grows. Direct dialog puts Miller’s team in a better position to help as it can gather more and better information about their customers’ needs.
And the best expression of how closely Miller listens, is X-Ray Analytics, a Moodle plugin developed by Moodlerooms that lets teachers assess student activity and participation. X-Ray can forecast students final grades based on their activity.
Miller views Blackboard equal parts a technology and a user communication company. Implementation always comes with a team effort to listen to the client, sometimes even including qualitative user research tools, such as focus groups.
