Why Teachers Find Grading So Tough In Moodle, And How To Fix It

Learning is pivotal to the overall growth of any individual, be it the traditional classroom learning, or even the more modern online learning.

And as far as online learning goes, there’s nothing new in how rapidly the online learning ecosystem has been expanding for the past few years.

But then, talking about learning, it brings me to ask you a question that has had me hooked for quite long.  

Is learning an independent entity?

The evaluation part, that usually follows the learning process, helps teachers understand how well a student has been able to grasp the concepts taught.

What’s alarming though, is the direction in which the present education system, in terms of evaluation, is headed.

More and more students, in spite of attending lectures regularly, are turning out to be incompetent when it comes to succeeding in the professional world.

This is due to the absence of a comprehensive evaluation method for students.

Coming up with unique and user-friendly solutions for Moodle for some years now, we at Edwiser thought of diving into understanding how efficient the evaluation systems of popular Learning Management Systems are. Here’s what we found out!

What’s missing in the existing LMS space

In our interactions with a lot of teachers, ranging from school and university faculty to professional learning consultants, one word stood out at the time of describing the evaluation process in Moodle.


It is tough for teachers to grade students in Moodle. Moreover, teachers find it tough to even understand how the grading flow actually works, and this leads to a lot of time being wasted.    

What this has led to is more and more universities and schools opting for workarounds to make the technology work how it’s supposed to, and not really solving the problem at its root. Teachers settle with moving to different question types where the grading can be automated and quickly done.

But choosing an automated grading process does not help in evaluating students effectively. Why? Because of two reasons.

  1. It risks a serious lack of quality feedback for students. Since teachers find grading to be complicated, they often fail to provide comprehensive feedback for their students. As a result, students feel more and more disconnected from teachers, due to the absence of a constructive feedback system in place.
  2. Automated grading doesn’t cover all possible question types. In a language training, for example a teacher has to check things like fluency and command over the language. This cannot be evaluated simply using automated grading. To evaluate such skills and abilities, you have to include Assignment or Essay type questions. There are plugins that can help here, but they require some study time and testing to make it work.

Is there really a solution to the evaluation problem in Moodle?

Considering how serious an issue this is, wouldn’t it be amazing if this gap could be reduced? A solution that would have everything in one single interface. A solution that could let a teacher provide comprehensive feedback to students, and also save time.

All of these questions, and possibilities had kept us hooked for a long time, pushing us to figure out how we could come up with such a solution.

And as they say, perseverance pays off, and it did.
