How To Build Upon Your Earlier Moodle Successes With The Course Templates Plugin

What is professional development in instructional design but a sequence of increasingly better practices at work in course and content creation?

The Course templates plugin is a simple and lightweight tool to create courses using the structure and contents from a template course. It works under the same premise as the Use template on course creation plugin, albeit through a slightly simpler workflow. The ability to turn any course into a template also sets this plugin apart.

Let’s take a look at how you can build a template and add courses.

Log onto your Moodle site as an admin. Install Course templates automatically by visiting the plugin page on the Moodle directory as a logged in user (you’ll need to link both Moodle accounts) or manually, by downloading it from the directory and then uploading it to your site. Refresh your site.

Go to Site Administration > Courses.

Your Moodle site now has a “Add course” option on the “Courses” settings group. Clicking on it now will lead to an empty page. To activate the page’s settings, you need to create a “Course Templates” category with at least one course, which you can do through the “Manage courses and categories link” on top.

Create a category named exactly “Course Templates” (mind plural and capitalization.) Fill out other fields and options to taste, then click “Create category.”

Go back to “Manage courses and categories link” and open “Add a new course” to create your template. Add as many customizations you want to your final products. Make sure you add them to the “Course Templates” category.

In the example, the only customizations added to the course were setting 3 sections instead of 4, each one with custom names. Alternatively, you can upload a course to set as a template by adding it to the “Course Templates” category.

You have successfully created a template course. Now you can use the “Add course” link, which this time will show your list of templates, each with a “Use as template” button. The only fields you need to fill out (because they can’t be rolled over in the template) are course category and  full and short names. Click “Continue” to finish. You have now added your first course from a template.

To make sure your next course incorporates some of the clever ideas you evolved during the implementation of the previous one, all you have to do is add the course to the “Course Template” category. Just make sure you remove all non-general elements before you use the “Add course” option.
