Part of the push for a more intuitive interface, file drag-and-drop is now enabled in any Moodle 3.3. course page. All it takes is activating “Editing mode” by clicking the gear at the top right corner of the section.

This ability might look like a minor thing, but in reality, the continuous evolution of innovation in interaction methods is considered fundamental in the “adoption boom” of computers, which before the 1990s were mostly considered as “fringe” machines reserved for hobbyists. Only at the turn of the millennium did the increasing body of research on the importance of space into the cognitive framework become available. It’s been several years since this groundbreaking insight found its way into applications in software, and many generations of interfaces have passed since, but there are reasons to believe that designers have only scratched the surface when it comes to interactive interfaces.

On a Moodle page with editing features enabled, dragging a file from the desktop or a folder into the browser window will prompt a menu asking about the way the file should be handled. Media files, for example, can be uploaded for student download or embedded for playback directly from the Moodle page using the LMS default media player. Editing mode is available for admins or teachers only. Also, keep in mind that Moodle may not be able to handle every kind of file; media files or PDFs and similar documents are safe bets.

While drag-and-drop is available across services all over the web, its deployment is not a trivial task, involving custom browser specifications and a series of “event listeners” which require additional code.
