The race for the fastest possible way to enroll on a Moodle course is on at Dearborn. The developers at this Public Schools District from the Greater Detroit area, to whom we also owe the “Fordson” theme, are working on “Easy Enrollment”, an Enrolment Type plugin. While it is still in development and testing stage, you can see a demo in action now.
The “Easy Enrollment” plugin adds a small text field on a Moodle Dashboard. When activated on a course, it generates a unique course code. When students log in and enter the code on the field, it instantly enrolls them and takes them to the Course Overview page. It mimics a similar functionality from other LMS such as Classroom.
That’s not all. It includes QR code functionality. A button next to the text field opens a small camera window to add the QR version of the code. It is designed for K-12, so young students can point their device’s camera to a QR code for instant access.
Furthermore, it can create group codes. By adding the code on the homepage field, the user not only enrolls and goes to the Course Overview, but they are already part of a group. This is useful for team projects, for example.

I’d love to know when or if this enrolment plug in will be available? Such functionality! Can someone email me, or how will we know when it’s available? Thanks a ton!
We will be updating to Moodle 3.2 in June. Most likely we will post to github and Moodle.org after that. It is production ready right now to the best of our testing. Since we developed it, we’d like our teacher to use it first. I should point out that this plugin will require some editing of your homepage if you do not use the Fordson theme. Our big vision is a tightly integrated theme to display the content, an enrollment plugin to get the student to the content, and a yet-to-be developed course format to help organize the content (Sept/December). The course format will blend a blog-like social forum page with a Topics format page and include a page just for teachers which will display learning analytics, enrollment codes, and more.
Thank you for the great information. No, I don’t have Fordson but if there were some instructions about how to move things around and add this plug in this to me is like buying a cadillac 🙂 Keep us posted.
Thanks for your interest. More details will be forthcoming. If you are not handy with customizing a theme at the code level then you will want to use Fordson since it will be fully integrated. In order for the plugin to be effective you want the easy enrollment form front and center on the homepage. That requires putting the code in your theme to do so. Otherwise install Fordson, activate easy enrollment, and the form will instantly appear on the homepage. We hope to have a publicly available plugin during the summer.
