Moodle HQ Community Manager Helen Foster is inviting everyone to become a tester for the upcoming Moodle 3.4 release, scheduled for Monday, November 13th.

The Quality Assurance stage is a semiannual tradition that signals the last weeks before the new release. For a new Moodle to be deemed ready to release, the rate of tests passed by Moodle must be above 80%. In recent history, most Moodle releases have been released with 100% pass rates. The last version, however, was a glaring exception, as the pass rate for Moodle 3.3 was just over 70% which caused a delay on the release date. The failing grade was due to a low rate of community participation, as the testers signed up could not keep up with the hundreds of tests available. For Moodle 3.4, 570 tests have been made.

Aspiring testers must follow the following steps:

  1. Sign up for a Moodle Tracker account at
  2. Sign up for a Moodle Forum account at
  3. Message Helen Foster your Moodle Tracker user name and request to join the testers team.

Once you are approved, you will be able to pick tests to perform on the Tracker using the QA site at You can check out Moodle 3.4, in the role of your choosing, even if you decide not to help Moodle by becoming a tester.

Skilled developers are also welcome to provide a fix to any issues identified. But note that at this point, no new functionality can be added to the immediately upcoming release, as the Moodle core is on a “code freeze” to make the QA process more manageable.
