Merry Moodle 3.2 New Year! The New Graphs In Moodle Are More Than Decorations

A recent press release on, following the launch of Moodle 3.2, shares details on the new graphing capabilities in the core software. This welcome addition is intended to make analytics more approachable for teachers, so they can make better decision focusing on their students.

Eight different visualizations are supported. They are based off the Chart.js, an Open Source technology that is constantly adding new features. As of late, mixed visualizations are possible in a same chart (say, bars and a trend line), more complex scales (inverse or logarithmic) and animations are Chart.js options.

Accessibility features include the ability to hard code colors to ensure better contrast.

Some of the features of Graphs in Moodle are:

  • Responsiveness to match the theme.
  • Tooltips and data shown by hovering on a visual element.
  • Table view.

And the things you can graph include:

  • Class responses to surveys.
  • Class and individual grades.
  • Attendance.
  • Reports.
