Moodle HQ has officially announced the latest updates for their versions still in active support. These minor or “2-point” versions include new features, bug fixes, and security improvements. Administrators are encouraged to upgrade promptly.

Below, a breakdown of what’s new.

Moodle 2.7.20 (LTS)

The long run of Moodle 2.7 is officially over. A fix over the PHP fileinfo function that detects file type and encoding and a timezone fastening, were its last upgrades.

Sites running 2.7 are strongly encouraged to upgrade to Moodle 3.3 within the next two months.

Moodle 2.8 and 2.9 are no longer supported as of last year.

Moodle 3.0.10

Also the last release, 3.0 includes the same upgrades from Moodle 2.7.20.

Moodle 3.1.6 (LTS)

Launched a year ago, this is the last upgrade with bug fixes and new features for Moodle 3.1. Among them we have:

  • Backpack for Moodle Badges can work independently from Mozilla Badges
  • “Export of Analysis” page back
  • Mathematics in JavaScript application MathJAX updated
  • Memcached 1.4.23 and PHP incompatibility: Moodle recommends upgrading the site to PHP7
  • Fixes to automated backups, drag-and-drop, Feedback, Assignment, and Database, LDAP sign on, and more

Moodle 3.2.3

This version comes with the improvements for Moodle 3.1, plus some fixes to the “Boost” theme.

In terms of security for Learning Tools Interoperability, SSLv3 is no longer enforced, as it has been found to be “broken” and many clients already reject it.

All Moodle versions receive twelve months worth of support, averaging 10 “2-point” releases. Afterward, they receive support for security issues over the next six months, with the exception of Long Term Support (LTS) version, which gets 2 years. LTS versions usually launch every two years. See information on upgrading here.

The next major version, Moodle 3.3, is scheduled for May 15th, 2017.
