Moodle 3.2 is now available for download. It is not a beta or a release candidate. has released an infographic highlighting the changes that come with the release. Thanks to the community of volunteer education technologists that has supported it throughout the years, some of the feature that become default with Moodle 3.2 were available as plugins. Now, they will enjoy full support by Moodle HQ.

But there are also several changes that could only come through a revision at the core. It is a voluntary revolution that will not force changes for those content with their current user experience; but it provides administrators, teachers and students a new array of possibilities to bring into their daily workflow.

Moodle ‘Boost’

The main interface of Moodle 3.2 is the “Boost” theme, a responsive, decluttered version intended to give prominence to content. It strives to unify the desktop and mobile experience.

There have been fears about the disappearance of Moodle blocks, which for some are critical as they display news, announcement or events for their course. Moodle CEO and founder Martin Dougiamas has set them to rest. With “Boost”, the blocks become optional. (Blocks are not available in Moodle Mobile.) But they still exist, and they are necessary at the dashboard.

The changes are not too radical, so long-time Moodle users will learn it quickly, but they give Moodle sites a fresh, new appearance that aligns with many websites and apps that you might be familiar with.

Messaging and Notifications

A contribution by the University of Minnesota, new interfaces for messaging and notifications intend to make Moodle the one destination for learning and project collaboration. You can still receive email notifications, or get them directly on your mobile device if you have Moodle Mobile.


A selection of user tours, which use to be plugins for previous versions of Moodle, allow teachers and administrators to give “engaging and informative” walkthroughs, to make students feel at home, quickly know where everything is and all the tools put at their disposal.

Media Player

A fully featured, modern standard plugin with features like subtitles and captions, diverse file compatibility, and faster streaming. The Video.js framework used by the players was design with accessibility in mind. Uploading or sourcing video is also possible.

Interactive Graphics

Embedded in the LMS users will be able to create charts with real-time data about their performance or their students’. It is based on the chart.js framework and developers can take advantage of it right from the Moodle API. Moodle 3.2 also includes default graphs for reporting.

LTI Compliance

The LTI 2 standard covers all content you create in Moodle. This will allow you to incorporate content from other LTI providers, including other Moodle sites; or to allow other teachers to use your content on their sites.

Competencies and Rubrics

More powerful features are available to incorporate institutional frameworks and rubric markings, with spreadsheet import and export. will also feature standard competency frameworks that you can apply to your Moodle. Rubrics are also expanded and allow for arbitrary scoring.

Moodle Mobile Compatible

All Moodle 3.2 features exists in Moodle Mobile, for a seamless experience.
