For those select Moodlers who enjoy the small details often hidden by interface designers, the release of Moodle 3.3 gave us a bittersweet moment with the replacement of all Moodle icons. Originally a set of images, these icons have been replaced with a corresponding character from Font Awesome, a font type meant to replace those visual cues that are so common across websites today.

It was only a little sad having to say goodbye to the Moodle icons. Who among us with a few Moodle versions under their belt would not recognize the white and orange megaphone for feedback activities, the green puzzle piece for external tools, or the page with the red check mark? Admittedly, we are fond of them now mostly because of nostalgia. They remind us of simpler, more skeuomorphic times.
Classic Moodle Icons, may thee rest in peace.

It did not take long, however, to realize the many benefits Font Awesome is bringing to the Moodle experience. For starters, they bring a sharper, more contrasting design, which can be a game changer for users with limited visual ability. Font Awesome was developed to comply with the AAA standard by W3C for high contrast across screen sizes and resolutions.

Furthermore, Font Awesome replaces a set of images with characters, reducing the size of the download to a fraction of its original, making for a faster Moodle.

Font Awesome is built into Moodle 3.3. Theme developers can adjust the properties of Font Awesome icons, from size to color, to the boundaries CSS3 lets them push. Font Awesome is an open source project, free-licensed and continuously improving.
