Moodle 3.2 – the recent stable release of the Moodle Project has the Boost theme to make Moodle awesome out of the box. Boost theme is based on the Bootstrap 4 framework which is still in alpha release and still changing at a rapid pace.
Recently, few of the Moodle theme designers have raised their concerns about opting the Bootstrap 4 as the base framework as it is still evolving and going through significant changes. The comments are not negative to the excellent hard work done by the Moodle HQ to bring Boost from concept to reality. However, it shows the adaptability issues with the new child themes based on Boost.
Contributed Moodle Theme designers for popular Moodle themes like Pioneer, BCU, Essential, Adaptable & Waxed etc. are quite unhappy with the move to adopt Bootstrap 4 as the base framework and suggested if the Boost theme could have been released as another Moodle plugin till there is a stable version of Bootstrap 4.
Does Moodle HQ team took a correct decision by adopting Bootstrap 4 for Moodle 3.2? #Moodleboost
The developers like Gareth J Barnard, Fernando Acedo, Mary Evans &  Richard Oelmann – all are criticizing the move and suggesting to continue the support for Bootstrapbase for the time till Bootstrap 4 stable is released.
I can understand the pain through which all of them are going through as it is very difficult to change the features in new themes based on the changes in Bootstrap 4 framework. I hope that Moodle HQ team will surely look into this positively and share plans for theme developers.
If you are a Moodle theme designer and would also like to be a part of the conversation to share your views about Moodle HQ’s decision for choosing Bootstrap 4 framework. Join the conversation in this forum thread?

  1. I was talking to a HQ and questioned the fact that Boost had come up with all the problems complained of over the years.
It seems to me that Moodle HQ does not have a Front End in the team.

  2. The title of this article should be written as “Did Moodle HQ team make the correct decision by adopting Bootstrap 4 for Moodle 3.2?”. Grammar matters at times when you have a worldwide audience of readers. 😉

  3. Many thanks Frankie for reporting, I have corrected that.
We learn by making mistakes only. I will try to improve upon these.
