Moodle 3.5 is right around the corner. The second major release in a refocus towards usability inside Moodle HQ, it means the team is making the existing features better and easier to use rather than adding lots of new ones. Not to say there aren’t new critical tools: perhaps most important of all are the Policy and Data privacy plugins that will help Moodle-based organizations comply with Europe’s upcoming GDPR legislation. The adoption of Bootstrap 4, the latest version of the visual framework for web applications, is another one of the features that was previously announced. A series of improvements on Messaging was also previously reported, though this is an enhancement rather than a new feature.

The latest outcome of the Moodle Users Association’s Project Development Cycle, “Expanded Question Bank Management,” is the main learning-focused functionality in Moodle 3.5. It will represent the third consecutive main feature coming from the collaborative process of MUA, which gives anyone (willing to put the effort in, that is) the chance to influence the way Moodle helps users advance their learning worldwide.

The official Moodle blog highlights the two previous features courtesy of MUA and the Project Development Cycle.

New Calendar: This previous MUA Project brought a series of long-awaited features to enable users to better manage their time and schedules. Events are color-coded, supporting visualizing different calendars in the same view. Event creation is greatly simplified, as is importing, exporting, and sharing.

New Course Overview: The top feature of Moodle 3.3 was a game changer for many users. Based on basic behavioral psychology insights, it offers a dynamic view of the progress made in a Moodle course along with choices that would keep students from guessing what they should do next. The new Course Overview comes with a few visualization options and updates in real time.
