Jared Stein recorded a one hour UStream session about his personal experience of rediscovering Moodle and implementing it at the Utah Valley University.  The presentation was given on January 21st, 2010 to higher education officials and the Utah Education Network and covered the “tools and features of Moodle 1.9.5 for the Utah Education Network, with particular emphasis on comparing features to Blackboard Vista” (according to his original post:

You’ll find his account not only unbiased, but fair.  A worthy watch/listen to it’s pro’s and con’s and the level of acceptance teachers and facilitators has exhibited towards it.

In Jared’s own words,

Moodle is far from perfect, it’s better in someways/worse than others than Blackboard Vista.  But most important is that it’s different.  I would not want to go back to teach on Blackboard Vista, personally.

The entire recording is available at and is embedded below.

Jared’s experience using Blackboard Vista gives him a unique perspective on the capabilities and features that are/are not included in Moodle.  During the presentation he comments on and demonstrates the many resources and activities available in standard versions of Moodle 1.9.5 and various third party plug-ins including TurnItIn and Questionnaire.

The presentation is also solid overview of basic and more complex Moodle features (including forums, the quiz module and workshop, which he highlights in great detail at ~33 minutes).

The UVU Moodle uses the myMoodle page for all users and is available here:  Several courses are open to guests in the OER course category:
