The University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil in Switzerland has created StudentQuiz, a Moodle plugin that puts students in the “driver’s seat” for the collaborative creation of self-assessments.

StudentQuiz lets groups of students contribute to question banks where they can share their own questions and benefit from the ones made up by the rest of the class. A simple user interface guides them in creating new questions or reviewing existing ones as practice. Throughout the quiz practice, students can rate and comment on questions. StudentQuiz collects usage data to estimate the difficulty and quality of each question.

Using StudentQuiz, teachers can approve questions and decide whether to show or hide the names of the students who authored them. A report gives them an overview in which students are ranked based on the quality and quantity of their contributions.

StudentQuiz is designed to create a student-driven learning experience where students are active creators of knowledge. Gamification is applied to challenge them to contribute high-quality questions and feedback. Large cohorts can easily build up extensive question banks, which can be managed using tags and filters. In the end, the questions become part of a question bank for the course or the Moodle site and can be reused in other Moodle quizzes.

StudentQuiz “initiator” Frank Koch showcased the development at this year’s MoodleMoot Germany, and Marcus Green shared it at MoodleMoot UK & Ireland. Upcoming features will hopefully shape StudentQuiz into a student’s personal learning assistant, allow the restriction of question types, and make the plugin able to run on Moodle Mobile as well.

Check out the introduction video for a thorough walkthrough and visit the demo site (requires free sign-up). To install StudentQuiz, download the StudentQuiz activity plugin from the Moodle plugin directory. Koch strongly recommends also installing the optional StudentQuiz Question behavior plugin, which allows rating and commenting on questions inside the StudentQuiz question bank and is key to ensuring high-quality input. StudentQuiz is compatible with Moodle 3.0 to 3.3 and is available in English, German, and French, with Spanish coming soon.
