Think of John Paul Posada and Morgan Harris at the University of New South Wales, as a five year old Moodle task force on large classrooms implementations and assessment.
More than starting anew, they looked to centralize a conversation about some of the recurring challenges of organizing a massively populated discussion, in ways that are productive to all involved. Specific issues include outcome-based teamwork, platform resilience, and of course, engagement. Right from the start a MOOC instructor must accept they will not be able to hold conversations with each student. Can we keep this inevitable interaction setback from nullifying the value of the course for the hundreds or thousands of virtual participants?
Harris joined Posada to deal with technical development, and eventually a team evaluation plugin, an issue at the core of teamwork assessment. They talk about finding the best way to assess individual work and contribution within a team assignment. Giving everyone the same grade can be unfair, but barring team projects altogether diminishes the real life applicability of the course lessons. Not to mention, it makes the assessment process more scalable.
Their talks details their three-level grading of team assignments: outcome, peer-evaluation and self-evaluation. The plugin, result of their development, is still in alpha. It will be a while before it joins the Moodle Plugin Directory.
