If your Moodle site does not already allow access via the Moodle Mobile app, you’re not alone, but your students and teachers are missing out on a tool that can create serious advantages.

One reason some teachers and administrators haven’t pushed for mobile is the concern about losing control of both content and student/teacher relationship. To address this, Moodle HQ has several solutions. Foremost, Moodle has continued to unify the interface experience on both a desktop browser and Moodle Mobile.

Moodle has also created the Availability Conditions Plugin, which gives further control to what students can and cannot do on mobile. Once installed, administrators are provided a suite of new options that allow them to set restrictions on Moodle Activities, for defined rules and scenarios. Any given Activity can be set as also available, exclusively available, or unavailable from mobile. Simultaneous restrictions are possible, according to dates, student grades and user fields, or groups, for instance.

Of course, if you are seriously seeking to increase your students’ mobile capabilities, your best bet is to upgrade to Moodle 3.2, and add the complete Moodle Mobile app plugin suite. Three plugins, in addition to Availability Conditions, will let you take full advantage of the Moodle Mobile app features, allow offline quizzing, and enable push notifications. Last, but not least, make sure your Moodle site has a valid certificate for mobile online access.
