One of the coolest things I’ve seen lately is the WIRIS equation editor on a touch screen and the ability to handwrite an equation with your finger and have the editor automatically recognize the mathematical notation (it really felt like the future). Carles Aguiló gave me a demo of the new tool available for WIRIS users in BETA (whether or not you’re using Moodle) and I was instantly hooked trying more and more complicated equations. Carles one-upped me by writing out the full quadratic formula which was recognized easily by the program. The WIRIS team has been working on this innovation for a while and plans to roll this out more widely in the next year. It’s now available in BETA but as you’ll see the in-house developed handwriting recognition is already pretty solid.

You can give it a try on their site at http://www.wiris.com/en/hand.

What are the implications for Moodle? Just think of the ability to capture student work as they work through solving mathematical problems and allowing them to do so whether or not they are on a computer, phone, or tablet. Courses just got a lot more accessible to users on the go.

How cool is that? More information about WIRIS for Moodle is available here: http://www.wiris.com/en/solutions/moodle

Note: WIRIS for Maths is a long time supporter of Moodlenews.com
