A press release on Design Science’s page announces its acquisition by WIRIS, a transaction which will soon lead to a “MathType Everywhere” solution that may preserve the compatibility of the company’s flagship product, as well as the trademark.

As “MathType Everywhere” is planned to offer versions for Microsoft Office Online and Google Docs, in addition to the existing add-ins for Office in Windows and OS, it is unclear if the MathType brand will appear on the platforms to which WIRIS provides functionality. It is a reasonable assumption that some of their features will become available for the WIRIS add-ins in Moodle, WordPress, Schoology, and the like. As Bruce Virga, Design Science’s CEO promises,

“By combining our teams, we will now be able to offer education, scientific and publishing communities newer products at a fast pace.”

The future of other Design Science products, MathFlow and MathPlayer, is undetermined.

Maths for More, the Barcelona-based brains behind WIRIS, develops mathematical visualization and notation add-ins for several LMS and other information systems. It offers a plugin family for Moodle, including editing buttons for the Atto and TinyMCE text editors, a text filter, and several question types.
