For over a year, Moodle has offered support for Competencies, Competency Frameworks, and Learning Plans. They recently featured this fact in the moodle.com blog as a way to raise awareness about this lesser-known feature Moodle has under its hood.
These three tools allow an organization to design a pedagogical structure that includes: learning outcomes, learning interventions, time schemes, performance monitoring, and general analytics. As Moodle’s Community Educator Mary Cooch explains, these tools work across many courses. A teacher can, for example, match a competency to an activity on their course.
The personalization that Moodle offers will allow each individual their own Learning Plan. An organization could give students full autonomy in their Learning Plans. As long as Course Activities match the Plan’s designated competencies, students can take and pass those courses whose interventions ensure the achievement of every competency in the Plan.
While this customization is a desirable, it may at times be unrealistic. Thankfully, Moodle also offers a solution.
Detailed by Cooch, the solution involves creating a custom role, such as a learning ‘coach’ or ‘sponsor’ that can track a cohort of students across their courses. If teachers are looking to do this, they need a custom user role like this one.
Administrators can create these roles and assign them staff in order to monitor a specific cohort of students. Below are the three examples of these roles with step-by-step instructions to set them up.
The Competency reviewer validates evidence of achievement in a learning intervention according to a set of competencies.
The Learning Plan viewer gives oversight to a students behavior and performance, but without control over competencies or learning plans.
The Learning Plan supervisor assigns learning plans to students, which they can also create and review.
