Should you be concerned if the credentials of one Moodle user are used simultaneously in more than one system? In some cases, it could be case for concern.

By default, Moodle does not prohibit multiple logins from the same user account. If an admin is suspicious, they do have the Browser session page tool. They can find detailed information of student logins, including data such as dates and IP addresses.

The Unique Login plugin

Unique Login plugin makes sure each Moodle user only has one active session simultaneously.

Not only that, it allows for “Limit concurrent logins.” This way, it accomodates cases where it makes sense that a user is accessing from more than one device at once. Once the limit is reached, the oldest session will be terminated.

You can limit the concurrent logins from Site Administration > Plugins > Authentication > Manage Authentication > Limit concurrent logins. Please note that users may lose all unsaved work.

This setting is not compatible with single sign-on (SSO) authentication plugins.

Unique Logins plugin last updated in October, 2018. Compatible versions are available from Moodle 1 all the way up to Moodle 3.5.
