Updated in a recent Moodle release users will now be shown a warning message when/if their internet connection has dropped during the quiz. The feature, added in Moodle 2.5 and has been refined with the warning and now is documented in the Docs at Moodle.org.
This is truly an awesome feature for solving and preventing student headaches.

Do they know there is a typo in the warning? “You should make a not of any responses…”
@John, old picture, it was caught and fixed before being launched as part of Moodle.
