L’Université Catholique du Louvain, Belgium’s largest university on the French-speaking side (third overall), awarded Moodle founder and current CEO of Moodle HQ, Martin Dougiamas, with a honorary doctorate. Louvain’s Brussels campus was the host of MoodleMoot Francophonie 2018, a gathering of the French-speaking populations in Europe and the world.

Three themes ruled the event, which also doubled as Belgium’s first MoodleMoot, according to Louvain’s Philippe Neyt: How Moodle transforms the space and time in the relationship between student and learner; Moodle in the creativity, critical thinking, and civic engagement of learners; and Moodle as an open hub of knowledge and skills.

Other highlights

  • “Les Ateliers” (Workshops) including H5P and LTI were replaced by a last-minute session on “Ludifié” (Gamification)
  • The “Moodle in prison” talk.
  • Demo sessions by Enovation, ReadSpeaker, WIRIS, Edunao, Ubicast, and more.
  • The return of Moodlebox, a Moodle in a Raspberry Pi solution.

  • On a lighter note, the Moot coincided with another kind of Francophonic success: Belgium and France’s advancement to the World Cup semi finals. There could be a first-in-history French-speaking final!
