Moodle HQ’s David Mudrák, recurring mentor for Moodle developers undertaking Google Summer of Code, has announced that for the 12th time, Moodle has been chosen as a GSOC partner.

GSOC offers budding developers the opportunity to spend a few weeks during the summer break to contribute to an open source project. In the past, GSOC has supported the development of interests and skills regarding open source development, giving them a “real-world software development” experience. To date, it involves more than 13,000 participating students from 108 countries and 608 partnerships with open source organizations. Students, teachers, and schools interested in proposing candidacies for Moodle development should do the following:

Candidates must be familiar with programming languages PHP, HTML, SQL, and JavaScript at a minimum. Read more about “GSOC” in the Moodle Developers Documentation.

Another opportunity for experienced Moodle developers is to offer project mentorship for students selected by GSOC 2018. They should also reach out to Mudrák. A “GSOC Mentor Guide,” collecting years of experiences and tips, is also available. The call for GSOC 2018 will be open from Monday, March 12th to Tuesday, the 27th. The announcement on the chosen projects will be April 23rd. Students will be expected to work on their open source projects throughout the western hemisphere’s summer, from May 14th to August 6th. Evaluations by peers and mentors will follow, with results and pass/fail statements scheduled for Wednesday, August 22nd.
